Offsite backups are still one
of the most secure methods to ensure data
can be restored in case of disaster. The
drawback is that it requires intervention
from someone to keep track of the rotation
and making sure the media actually makes it
out of the office. Tape libraries can
automate the backup process and maintain the
tape rotation, but are generally cost
prohibitive for smaller systems.
There are many other hardware
and software options available ranging from
media backup to high availability
replication. Most solutions allow a full or
partial restoration of data to a previous
point in time. Some programs take data
snapshots that allow rollbacks while others
image entire hard drives for a complete
restoration to a new drive if necessary.
It is important to consider
that modern systems have a level of
complexity that goes beyond the data. Many
software applications and their associated
information also have a dependency on the
system structure. Incorporating items such
as the system state and registry structure
in the backup solution can be critical to
data restoration
