Voice over IP (VoIP) is narrowing the gap between data and telephone systems at a rapid rate. There will soon be a day when both are serviced by Information Technology. Modern telephone systems allow a company to utilize their data network thereby reducing the cost of the system and the recurring line charges.  However, in most cases telephone and data systems are still cabled separately rather than on a universal system that services both the present and future systems.
