The number of unscheduled power outages
have increased significantly
over the past several years
and while most are minor
interruptions lasting less than a
few hours some continue for several
days. Utility companies are
experiencing an increase in the
power requirements and often have to
interrupt service as they build new
facilities. The power shortage along
with a loss of control due to
deregulation has forced power
conservation in many areas by
intentional 'rolling blackouts'
during the coldest and hottest
seasons.
Mother Nature has also plagued the
world with an increase of major
storms lately. From
ice to hurricanes, there have been an unusual amount of
natural disasters recently. The cause of the
phenomenon is up for debate, but
most experts do agree that the
pattern will possibly continue for
decades. |
